Freelance Projects (2006/7/8)

  • Consulted as Chief Applications Architect for Motorola’s mobile applications business unit (2006-8). Heavy focus on using Web 2.0, IMS and Mobile TV. including convergence with IPTV and home networking appliances (e.g. Home Hub). Other activities included:
  • Running internal Mobile 2.0 mash-ups lab using agile methods
  • Managing large technology ecosystem with partners
  • Architect of numerous mobile solutions for operators and media companies
  • Technical strategy and Mobile 2.0 use case consultant

  • Providing strategic and technical advice to software house on Ringback Tone platform concepts within a Parlay framework
  • Interactive texting tools (e.g. Xsonic)
  • Authored new book “Next Generation Wireless Applications” for Wiley (First edition)
  • Designed concept for new mobile game “texterise” for Just Fabulous record label and clothing company.
  • Developed intellectual property for viewing large-screen images on small devices - subject to ongoing research and patent search.
  • Wrote and delivered world-class training programs for operator 3 UK, subsequently made available to other operators.
  • Designed and project-led 2-way text-messaging application for the automotive industry (Car showroom service departments)
  • Designed and project-led 2-way text-messaging interface to commercial databases (Oracle, SQL, etc.) that incorporates a visual design tool (based on state charts) to allow rapid application development. Visual tool implemented in C++. Server and SMS connector written in Java.
  • Designed and project-led UK development of one of the world’s first location-based service platforms for the Hong Kong market. (Metrowalker for operator CSL). Paul was also CTO of Metrowalker during this project.
  • Designed and project-led mobile collaborative working environment for Motorola field staff (Swindon, UK)
  • Designed and co-programmed wireless instant messaging service with location-based extensions for customer trials of GRPS equipment (Barcelona, Spain)
  • Conducted research and developed report to examine the feasibility of indoor wireless location strategies for virtual shopping assistant concepts (Sknow, UK). This project was done for Ajit Jaokar, who is now widely known in mobile industry for his publishing and blog activities with Futuretext.
  • Project managed development of mobile knowledge management tool for standards representatives working throughout the Motorola global organisation.
  • Designed and co-programmed (using Extreme Programming techniques - new at the time) WAP and text-messaging connector for Microsoft Exchange including the world’s first RSA Inc. certification for a wireless enterprise product (to allow RSA SecurID two-factor authentication).
  • Designed mobile constant-sync solution for PDA access to Exchange, similar to RIM Blackberry and licensed to a US Competitor, but never launched due to legal issues (within the US competitor product portfolio, not Magic E).
  • Designed and co-programmed (using Extreme Programming techniques) 2-way text-messaging connector for Microsoft Exchange
  • Designed a visionary 3G services prototype to demonstrate advanced multimedia services for NTT DoCoMo before 3G was ready (to run on pre-3G WCDMA trial network)
  • Designed and programmed the world’s first wireless portal for Lucent Technologies, called Zingo, featured at GSM World Congress in Cannes for two years running (1998/99) causing major stir about 'garden wall' issues.
  • Designed and programmed text-messaging email and web-interface gateway for Lucent Technologies’ Intranet
  • Provided scalable IT architecture, design and extensive consultancy for the development of Lucent Technologies’ GSM.WEB intranet, which included various mobile add-ons (SMS, WAP - pioneering back then!)
  • Designed and programmed numerous dynamic web applications for various clients, including use of ActiveX objects to achieve dynamic updating of web pages (prior to AJAX)


Projects done whilst permanent employee at Motorola (1990-1996)

  • Researched wireless 3D communications techniques for mobile virtual reality applications (Swindon, Wilts, UK and University of Southampton, Hants, UK)
  • Conducted research into asynchronous logic-design techniques to reduce power consumption in GSM radios (Swindon, Wilts, UK)
  • Developed high-level simulation strategy to model large-scale wireless systems using queueing-theory modelling with the SBS Workbench toolset (used to design Pentium chip), (Swindon, Wilts, UK)
  • Developed algorithm for fuzzy-logic cleaning of baseband GSM carrier to reduce co-channel interference [see paper] (Swindon, Wilts, UK)
  • Designed DSP chipset solution for single-chip baseband processing of GSM radio for entire base station carrier (Swindon, Wilts, UK)
  • Lead consultant for Motorola SPS development of a parallel processor (SIMD) for wireless processing applications (Austin, Texas, US)
  • Designed communications protocol processing ASICs for baseband processing in GSM radio (Munich, Germany)
  • Designed Viterbi co-processor ASIC for subsequent design in Verilog toolset (Chicago, Ill, US)
  • Designed a logic-mopping ASIC using formal design methods to automatically produce VHDL code for hand-finalisation and synthesis using Mentor Graphics toolset (Swindon, Wilts, UK) - first person in Europe to use QuickSIM VHDL simulator.
  • Designed and simulated signal-processing board for remote GSM diagnostics tool
  • Designed various location-finding algorithms submitted for patent applications (before LBS was ‘invented’)
